[Unofficial] Goodbye to Sunshine

October 14, 2010
October marks the end of the sailing season, the month when all boats must make their way down the Chicago River to be stored for the cold months of the year. In a sailboat, this trip takes all day due to the city’s numerous bridges that have to be raised before you can travel through.

ahh Chicago....

raising bridge 1 of 23

The way this trip works, is that one by one, a bridge is raised and then lowered once each boat has gone through. This happens 23 times. Sometimes, at busier streets where the el trains need to be coordinated as well, you have to tie up the boat for a few minutes until a bridge can be raised. The boyfriend had a craving for donuts, and used my IPhone to search for the nearest Dunkin Donuts. I seriously thought he was kidding about hopping off the boat the next time we tied up (once a bridge goes up there is no waiting, you have to go through!), so I helped give him directions to the Dunkin Donuts in the Merchandise Mart.
Turns out, he wasn’t joking!

my little delivery boy

He hopped a fence, sprinted, and didn’t stop until he had a dozen little treats in his hands. Before anyone could tell him NO, he was off the boat and running though the city with sweets on the brain. I don’t think that any other boats could boast Boston Cremes that day 🙂 I’ll admit, I don’t think that I have ever enjoyed a donut so much.

donuts anyone?

    He is one crazy boy!

Looks like it was a beautiful day for a sail. Even tho it marks the end of the season, at least it was a beautiful end to it.

That is so cute! I love the little things boys just have to do sometimes. Hope you enjoyed sailing this summer, and don’t worry, spring is just around the corner, right?? :/

Remind me to date a boy with a sailboat… so cute! (And a fun side story, too!)
