Book Review: Water for Elephants

November 3, 2010

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

Due to the location of my new apartment, i’m taking the bus downtown to work instead of the el. It turns out that my bus stop is perfect, and that i’m able to get a seat EVERY DAY! Do you know what that means? I can READ ON THE BUS! HOORAY!!!

Needless to say, this new bus reading time is going to do wonders for my reading list. It feels so nice in the morning to get some reading done instead of twiddling with my phone & mindlessly browsing the internet. First in line for bus book club= Water for Elephants.

This book was breathtaking. I found myself wanting to skip my stop to get in another few pages. It’s gritty & rough, yet beautiful. The author obviously did her research, and was able to create an amazing story around circus life during the great depression. I would honestly pick up this book and read it a second time, starting tomorrow.

They are  making a movie based on the book, and although I hate to say it (because the book was so fantastic, and we all know what happens with movies when the book is great…), i’m really excited to see it!

I totally need to start reading books again on the bus. I’ve started reading the Wall Street Journal opinion/editorial pages and while they are interesting, I miss actually getting through books! I think you’ve inspired me 🙂

I read this a couple of years ago. Wasn’t it great? Can’t wait to see the movie!
