Book Review: Devil in the White City

March 31, 2011

Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

Holy Moly, this book is incredible! For some reason, this little gem has been sitting on my bookshelf for over 2 years, but did not make it into my hands until a few weeks ago. I literally sat on the bus on the way to work each day getting the chills over & over reading all about Chicago during the time of the World’s Columbian Exhibition, and all of the amazing events that transpired during that time.

Several key takeaways from this book:

1- I am very happy that I moved to Chicago in 2008, and not 1893. It sounded like a very scary & dirty place.

2- Landlords can be very creepy. I regret the fact that I currently have one.

3- Reading about Daniel Burnham (and crew) as well as the work that they accomplished in such a short amount of time will make you feel VERY good about your own to-do list.
